RINGO STARR AND HIS ALL STARR BAND
AKA: A Beatle finally plays at "Woodstock" 26 June 2010
So, it's 40 or so tooooo late, but Ringo Starr and the following amazing players:
Edgar Winter: Keys, Sax, Drums & Vocals
Gary Wright: Keys & Vocals
Greg Bissonette: Drums
Rick Derringer: Guitar & Vocals
Richard Page (Mr. Mister): Bass & Vocals
Wally Palmer (The Romantics): Guitar & Vocals
Made up the Eleventh incarnation of the All Starr Band!
And boy did they rock the site of the original Woodstock 1969 now known as
The Bethel Woods Center For The Arts. First the venue (and I have said this before) is the most wonderful, beautiful, friendly outdoor arena for music you are likely to find anywhere.
Do plan a visit, and check out the museum (but not on a concert day unless you are loaded for time and crowds). It's simply lovely. They allow you to bring in a reasonable supply of bottled water and food (check web site) and usually cameras too. It's a bit of a trip no matter where you come from (Bethel is in upstate New York, far from NYC etc.) but very much worth the drive!
Now show highlights, the opener was It Don't Come Easy and Ringo also did I Wanna Be Your Man, Act Naturally, Yellow Submarine, Boys and the show closed with a hybrid of With A Little Help From My Friends and Give Peace A Chance. Minor quibble, no Pass Me By and major quibble no Octopus's Garden, UGH! From his solo albums, he did Photograph and From Y Not, Peace Dream and The Other Side of Liverpool. About the latter song, Ringo said, "There were 2 sides of Liverpool. The poor side....and the VERY POOR side!"
For me the thrill was seeing Derringer and Winter slam and jam on such great tunes as Hang On Sloopy and Rock N Roll Hoochie Koo, not to mention Frankenstein and Free Ride. Frankenstein was a real workout for Winter; he played Sax, Keys and drums and it was the best version I have seen or heard in my long career of the song, which started out being called "The Double Drum Solo Song," by the way according to the composer. Natch on AM radio in NYC a few decades ago, the jocks called it, the "Hot Dogs And Beer Song!"
Without belaboring it, we heard the two biggest Romantics and Mr. Mister songs done very well by Mr. Palmer and Mr. Page respectively. Whilst Gary Wright did an amazing rehash that floored the crowd of his two master strokes, Dream Weaver and Love Is Alive.
And 2 hours later it was over, and we listened to even more Beatle tunes (on the iPod), all the way home, smiling and wondering if we'd ever see such a great lineup together on stage ever again. If you get the chance, do not miss this tour, and do look to attend something at Bethel Woods and thank me later!
Bottom Line: 4.5 stars (They'd get a perfect 5/5 if we'd heard 2 more Beatle songs!!)
Zeph, out
PS: Stayed tuned for more pics from this show soon on the blog!
