THIS IS TOM JONES....with ROCK LEGENDS on DVD coming soon!

Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young and...Jones??? Well, according to tomjones.com
the 1969-1971 Tom Jones TV Show will finally be available on DVD, and the first set will be three discs. Moreover, it will include classic performances of Sir Tom with the likes of CSNY, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, The Who and the Moody Blues.

Time-Life will launch the DVD set on direct sales TV in the USA on May 21st, 2007 and in the U.K. the set will be available on 5 June. The set will be available in the USA at retail stores on June 5th as well.

For those of you that never saw this show when it aired, I can tell you it was one of my favorites simply because of the great musical guests and the fearless vocalist that Tom Jones is, sharing the stage with extremely successful acts every week, just for the fun of doing it. Seeing the greats when they were rising stars and/or at their peak, I think this set in particular will be a wonderful addition to your musical DVD library.

Rock on, Sir Tom!

YES
Live At Montreux
DVD

Put Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman and Alan White on a famous Jazz Festival Stage in 2003 and what comes out of it on stunningly recorded 137 minute DVD is magical!

I've see several incarnations of Yes in concert, the last time at the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas a number of years ago, when I have to confess, I gave up my second row center seats to stand in the back because they were punishingly loud (with aircraft carrier in-ear plugs in). Maybe perversely loud. And frankly after that threat of permanent hearing damage I have soured on seeing them live ever again. Thank goodness for the invention of the live DVD.

Comparing this one to the House of Blues DVD released in 2004 is simple...the Montreux show has Rick Wakeman, period. I've never seen Wakeman in person, but I've obviously heard his studio and live work, both with Yes and solo. Yet until I allowed myself to be taken away by the Montreux DVD, I did not appreciate his power with the group live. He adds an amazing dimension and even a tad of a diversion, which can be spellbinding.

If you ever have see Wakeman live, I'm sure you understand. He even does a mini-solo performance in mid-gig, which is (forgive the hackney here) so cool!

The other players of course are masters in top form, and I agree with the (biased but true) liner notes that claim this is among the best Yes shows on tape or film, or digital media. The sound is good to excellent, the highs (cymbals and tambourine) are especially crisp and the dynamics of bass and keyboards really work. Anderson, so critical to a good show is in good to excellent voice and Howe gives a flawlessly smooth guitar star show too.

Even for the casual fan, this DVD needs to be on your shelf...and in the player...a lot.

Bottom Line: 5/5 stars.

Here's hoping for a Wakeman reunion with the rest of the group for 2008, the liner notes hint at that.

NEIL YOUNG
LIVE AT MASSEY HALL 1971

If you have no interest in seeing Neil Young doing a solo acoustic gig at his absolute prime, then only get the CD. For the rest of the world...get the limited edition CD/DVD double pack of this album just released in the USA. Now on to our review...

For those of you (like me) who have worn out a couple of vinyl copies of 4 WAY STREET and especially liked the acoustic guitar songs of Young on that album (and now CD of course)...you are going to love MASSEY HALL! It opens with "On the Way Home" and even includes an acoustic guitar "Ohio." Except for the missing CSN harmonies, this is a splendid album. Imagine Mr. Young doing a "coffee house" concert in your local college dorm, and you will get the picture. I debated on spoiling the surprise, but the interlude version of "Heart of Gold" is done on acoustic piano and beyond being a musical mile post for Young, it really shows the power of the tune, that was brand new when this concert was performed.

In fact, the power of Young's songs, heard so stripped down to basic vocal and rhythm guitar or piano, is the point. Young is a great writer, a very compelling performer and a soulful performer. You won't hear (or see, despite the low fi video) and better show from this man, in solo format. And the sound from over 30 years ago is pristine...the DVD is even better sounding; I will leave the technical explaination to the DVD master...it's on there.

If you like any of the more quiet side of Neil Young, run, fly or swim, and get this album. It's a masterpiece.

Bottom Line: 5/5 stars, just super!

R.I.P. BRAD DELP

Long before there was an American (or Pop) Idol a young band with a top-gun vocalist out of Boston showed us all how it was done. Brad Delp had a wunderkind voice and recorded layer after layer of searing, soaring harmonies that made the album and band BOSTON the towering success it was and still is.

Very few CDs in my collection (I bought the latest remaster to savor ever sonic nuance) will hold up as well as the first BOSTON album. And all his other contributions will keep him in the hearts and minds of all of us who love American Rock and Roll forever. He was 55. At this writing a cause of death was not determined.

Thanks, Brad for rocking us so well while you were in the free world! We will miss you always!
