JOE COCKER IN CONCERT
Sunday 13 February 2005
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

OVERALL: The show was great. My dear friend and companion said, "It was a privilege to see that show, it was so good."

She's right, with one glaring exception...

Memo to Joe Cocker and Band: TONE DOWN THE KICK DRUM, the rest of your mix is wonderful, but the bass drum was PUNISHINGLY LOUD. I had to "mentally" erase it, as I listened with military grade ear plugs, to enjoy the show. So glad I brought them; I can't imagine enjoying the show without hearing protection.

Memo to Everyone Going to see Joe Cocker in 2005: Buy or loan the "Heart & Soul" CD and play it a few times before you go. He does the entire album EXCEPT "Jealous Guy," "I (who have nothing)," "Love Don't Live Here Anymore," "Don't Let Me Be Lonely," and "Everybody Hurts."

Memo to Joe Cocker: I wished you had done "Everybody Hurts," but that's only a tiny quibble.

It's just less typing to list the songs (above) that were NOT done from the new CD. The new ones that were done, with "Chain of Fools" as the opener, were wonderful. Just as good as could be. The best tune of the night for me was "You Are So Beautiful" done with electric (but acoustic sounding) piano and bass guitar. Delightful. Perhaps "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "One" were the other standouts.

And Joe was right on with his vocals. He knew his cues, to the note. He actually jumped up and down on stage a good few times...and didn't even fall down once!!!

There were no other big surprises, but the loads of J.C. classics were delivered with respect and care. And the band was among the tightest touring groups these old ears have ever experienced...except the F*&$ing kick drum!!!

J.C.'s sax/keyboard player with most of the band opened the show with about 4 smooth jazz tunes that were well received, nice job from HUGE GROOVE. I have to look for his CDs too. Groove played about 40 minutes and then Cocker and Crew came on stage at 830pm and stayed with only seconds off between encores until 10pm. A very compact and dense and carefully performed evening of a legend at work. Don't miss this tour.

Bottom Line: 4/5 stars (-1 for the drum, sorry it was otherwise a perfect show)...and bring good ear plugs and leave them IN.
