JEWEL LIVE AT HUMPHREY'S BY THE BAY
DVD IN REVIEW
Short version: BUY THIS DVD. If you ever wondered about the quality of the artist always known as Jewel, get this show. The concert itself begins with a gloriously beautiful Jewel singing without accompanist (and a net) "Per La Gloria D'Adorarvi" and then she does a nice solo acoustic guitar set of mainly tunes from her first 3 CDs. Note: this show was taped as she was JUST getting ready to do a tour in support of THIS WAY and not the current 03/04 CD.
For the last few tunes the knock-out (to hear and look at) Jewel is joined by a full band, and YOU will note she still dominates the music, even when just strumming along.
BONUS MATERIAL: there are 3 live songs in the bonus section which sound GREAT but have shaky camera action (perhaps to simulate a bootlegger). I wish they had just shot the stage with one STEADY camera, but they are very very good, none the less.
MORE BONUS: "Standing Still" on the road VIDEO...well it's OK. A little too unpolished, but one of my favorite Jewel hits, we will let it slide. And there's the obligatory interview, where you hear the star talk like a normal person about her craft, but you almost never hear the interviewer...B minus at best. Now the photo gallery, which on some DVDs is a waste, is actually COOOOOOOOL on this one. You see a series of stunning shots of this lovely lady, and musical back-drop. No pictures to click on, and just fab photos...A minus.
BOTTOM LINE: 5 stars for the show and other live material. Bonus stuff is above average...buy this DVD right now!!!
