WARREN ZEVON:
The Wind

Buy this CD if you have EVER enjoyed anything Zevon has ever done. I am on listen number 6 and can't turn it off. For those of you too close to Mars to remember, poor Warren is dying at this writing of lung cancer and this is likely his last (new) effort. And yet, according to USA TODAY (check out the nice article in the 8/29/03 issue, at least in the print version), most of the songs were written before he got so ill. You'll hear a rockin' Springsteen on "Disorder in the House" on guitar and vocals. You'll also hear Zevon's long-term collaborator Jorge Calderon playing touching acoustic guitar and singing in tandem on "El Amor De Mi Vida" (which is half in English, and georgeous). I guess I can strain to hear Tom Petty on "The Rest of the Night" (a real party-on tune), but other than that it's all Warren with appropriate backup, well hidden in the mix (and what a great mix of backup...read the booklet for more amazing names).

I compare this one to the Zephyr-rated 5 star 1978 Zevon album EXCITABLE BOY, which was only 9 songs, and less than 40 minutes in length. Zevon played an instrument or 2 on every song. EXCITABLE BOY made you rock, and THINK, and touched more than a few emotions AND nerves.

On THE WIND, he sings compellingly on every track, but plays on only a few of the 11 songs. No matter, it rocks, and it is at times so poignant, it just might make you shed a tear for someone you know is spiraling down. But we'll be there with you some day Warren, and until then I thank you on behalf of the millions of people who have seen you in concert (I was lucky enough to see a solo show circa 1983, it was GREAT) and heard your music. Thanks so much for hanging in there to see this project through. It was worth the effort. Now rest my friend, until your time comes for your last goodbyes. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

WARREN ZEVON "THE WIND" is a FIVE STAR SPECIAL.

NEIL YOUNG -- GREENDALE CD and DVD set

Neil Young's new CD is out today (8-19-03) called Greendale. It's a kind of rock opera, only 10 songs, all in the "Needle & Damage Done" or "Tonight's the Night" mode. I am just finishing listen number one and you have to be in the mood for this; I suspect a beer (or Viagra?) might help it move along. I hear reflections of "Old Man" and even "Heart of Gold" in this production; but the new songs are no where near as memorable.

But it is compelling. And at the time I write, it currently comes as a CD+DVD 2 disc pack. The DVD is Young solo in a small theater in Dublin, doing the album (mainly on acoustic guitar and harmonica). The CD was recorded with a very live-in-the-studio feel (and mix; the instruments rarely change places on the musical stage) and sounds GREAT that way. And the list price (for the 2 discs) is US $19.99, but you can get it for about 12 and small change (nice for 2 discs) at some large retailers. My local indie music shop had it for $12.88 today, and so I splurged.

It helps if you read the "story" (really rambling story) in the booklet, THEN watch the DVD and then enjoy the electric (mostly) CD later. At least that works for me. You can sort out the theme of the project for yourself. Young in this outing (according to ROLLING STONE his last under long-term contract with Reprise Records) seems to go for broke. You'll either see the pathos, and few smiles and loads of sighs, or you will be bored into submission.

The mag mentioned above gave the piece 4/5 stars. That is about right, but realize you have to WORK to enjoy this album. I wonder had I NOT seen the DVD (or read the booklet) would I have enjoyed the 10 studio tracks as much, or appreciated the theme(s). I doubt it.

Finally, the mag above ran a nice piece on Neil's current USA tour, in which he does the entire GREENDALE saga, with the band, and actors playing the characters in the story. He apparently does do a few other songs, but performs this album in order non-stop, forming the majority of his show. IF you are going to see Neil this summer, you better pick up this set, to quote Stills, "if you don't you will be lost!"

PAUL IS LIVE in concert on the New World Tour DVD

Just out this week, a 1993 concert movie, decidedly NOT a video. This concert is wonderful in content,
great songs, flawless (no doubt slightly doctored, but who cares) performances. And Paul is in GOOD to GREAT voice;
indeed much much better sounding than on "The Concert for NYC" or "Back in the US" CDs or DVDs. Admit it, if you
noticed, his last 3 commercial recordings (the above + "Drivin' Rain"), were pale immitations of what once
was a georgeous rock/pop male voice...but anyway...

The "movie" feel of this DVD is my major gripe. Constantly stuttering images, get really old after 20 minutes or
so. Moreover near seizure-inducing cutaways to supposedly poignant images (including a guy in a bear suit
with lyrics to a song on Q-cards, I kid you not), are annoying. I thought when he comes on solo for "Yesterday"
this sappy stuff would stop, but no......it's back to the cheese-ola grainy black and white, followed by more crowd
shots in slow motion, and you NEVER really see the show as performed for more than a nano-second, UGH!

I think they put this one together with the unfounded mortal fear that anyone "just" watching a concert would be bored by
actually WATCHING the concert. Wrong-o!

The beauty of DVD for me (who only buys MUSIC DVDs), is you can return to a great show "as if you are there"
over and over again, and have a "great seat." NOT for this one. You really want to just LISTEN to the
soundtrack, which again I say is top notch.

The sound is in several categories; I just played the standard stereo on the TV. But there IS a "headphone"
audio set-up choice. Perhaps Paul knew the visuals would be annoying, and figured anyone "watching" this
DVD for the second time would strap on the head-set and read or just zone-out. I think that is what I will
try next.

Now it is nice to see the Late Linda McCartney on stage with this post-Wings-group. She met a sad end, and
their relationship is a wonder in the world of celebrity-gawkers like myself. Here that, Demi? And it is STILL silly
watching her stand behind a few thousand dollars worth of keyboards, shaking a $20 tamboreen! But the nostalgia
of seeing THIS incarnation of the McCartney band (circa 1993, and the same group that did the FIRST-EVER "Unplugged" CD), is a nice touch.

Did you know the McCartney "Unplugged" CD was put out solely to beat the bootleggers from doing it? And it was out
only in limited edition in the USA, because they really did NOT think it would sell well? And after the first go-round, people
kept buying it, and buying it, as an import, at almost double the USA version price? And it launched a hugely successful
and highly profitable TV to CD empire! Go figure?

Perhaps as an homage to the Unplugged success, they do a short acoustic set (Linda on Tamboreen, and awfully background vocals), including acoustic bass, and a small drum set up with brushes, and it would have been compelling, but
NO, we have to have vertiginous video tricks, and more "images" than in any centuries-old cathedral worthy of the name.

So, I thought I'd never have to do this, but the rating is split

DVD sound and sonic content (songs and so on) 5/5 stars; among the best you will HEAR.
DVD visuals 1/5; among the most annoying you will EVER see!
DVD booklet 0/5; there is none, you only get the disc in an otherwise empty case, UGH!

More later friends, keep rockin'

Live at the Royal Albert Hall
The Who

This is a 2000 concert from the rather famous venue in London, and it rocks. The late John Entwistle is on bass (obviously) and in retrospect steals the show. In fact the majority of the 2 disc performance is Pete's guitar in one channel, John ("thunderfingers") bass in the other, and midline vocals and drums by Roger and Ringo's son Zak Starkey.

I also came away from one full listen, feeling that Zak was a good stand-in for the late Keith Moon. His beat-for-beat, homage to Moon, surrounded by more than a few personal touches, really makes the rhythm section pound away, and tastefully so on the few ballads.

Now you will note several guests. Bryan Adams sings "Behind Blue Eyes" and I wish he hadn't. Most of the guests don't steal the spotlight, and are enjoyable or at least tolerable. But all in all well worth the time. R.S. Magazine gave this disc 3/5 stars. I give it a solid 4, and at the right time of the night 4.9!

Finally, there is a 4 song recording with Thunderfingers on bass extra on at least one edition of this set. It's a nice tribute to the man, but doesn't quite "fit" with the original set, and grandness to the original show. Also, note the original show IS available on DVD, and there are writings we will see a revision by Christmas 2003 of THAT release. Keep your fingers crossed. The WHO will never be the same without their dearly departed, but this is a nice testament to where they were during Y2K.

OZZY OSBOURNE LIVE AT BUDOKAN
Ok, this is a few years old; I bought the CD when it came out. I watched the video snippet on the CD itself via CDROM and felt it was just an ad for the DVD. I wish they would have given us more music, and no video. More on that later.
So, it's a great concert, and is the most accurate show you'll legally hear from Ozzy, for those of you that don't want to go to Ozz-fest (ongoing as I write this August 2003). I have nothing against Ozz-fest, but to pay 10 (yup, there are 10 US dollar tix) to 75 bucks to wait through 5 or more groups you don't want to see, drinking 5 dollar bottles of water, and then see "the prince of f....darkness," for 80 minutes, tops, well it's alot to ask. Sorry I like Ozzy, for a good 25 years, but won't sit in the mud (ask anyone who had been at a wet Ozz-thing), all day to see him anymore.

NOTE: the CD comes in a "clean" (no F word) and normal (warning sticker) version. Get the normal one. Unless you have never heard the word before, and believe me you YOUNG kids have, it's all Ozzy. I just choose not to use that language on this page, in case it might offend anyone. Ozzy of course is too rich to give a sh...

Maybe there's a little too much audience participation in this one, and a few of my favorites are missing (Flying High Again, Shot in the Dark), but it's a great recent show.

NOW, I just a few days ago picked up the DVD of this title at my local Best Buy, for get this -- TEN DOLLARS! It's a good few bucks cheaper than even the CD. And if you are thinking of buying ONE, get the DVD. It's obvious value, and contains alot of side show stuff, that (one time) is fun to see. Also the DVD has "Suicide Solution" (missing on the audio version CD) on it with a LONG guitar solo (inclues "Star Spangled Banner" a throw-back to Jimi Hendrix, and a welcome one) and it's a treat. You also get "into" the crowd noise and chanting, and understand what all the ruckus was on the CD version after seeing this. For ten dollars, it beats sitting in the mud all day to see Ozzy from behind a few thousand fans who are so "up" they don't even know it's raining.

The only downside of the DVD versus being there, well, no girls flash on the video, better luck next release, hear me Ozzy?

Ratings:
CD version 4/5 stars.
DVD version 5/5 stars, and if you can get it for $9.99 like I did, just the other day, no big sale by the way, a BARGAIN.

Much more to come readers, thanks for stopping by,

MUSIC ZEPHYR (Treasures and Trash from my recent music CD and DVD purchases).

Hello all and welcome to Music Zephyr. In the coming days I plan to list at least one CD I have purchased with my own hard-earned money and tell you about it. I have no financial conflict of interest. I just want to tell you before (or after) you buy music, what I think of what's out there, both old and new. Note, I never, repeat never "swap" music, so don't ask. As unfashionable as it might be, I actually go to a local music shop, browse, and pay for it. I get nothing free.

I also will let you know what I hear in concert, or about concert (and quote the source), once in a while. Also rumors will be labeled as such. Finally, I reserve the right to get political on you once in a great while. SO HERE GOES....

AMERICAN WEDDING Movie Soundtrack
5/5 Stars!

I have not see the movie, and have only seen parts of the first AMERICAN PIE "thriller." What I can tell you is the current (released 7/03 in the USA) soundtrack is special. The best tune is Avril Lavigne's previously unreleased, "I don't Give" about NOT sleeping with a guy, no matter what he says. Xtina, take note! The rest is great power rock, with a few soft moments (between rushes!). Length just over 60 minutes. This one is a BUY.

More later, friends.
Zeph out.
